Member Newsletter - December 2024

Hello CMS members! The holidays are fast approaching and here are a few short updates. First, a reminder that our Maker Market is tomorrow – Sunday December 8th from 1pm to 4pm. If you are still looking for special items on your Christmas list, stop by to see what your maker peers are selling – and please tell your friends. Also, member volunteers are needed to help make quilts and window insulation inserts; see details below. CMS Artist in Residence Jane Kolias has been busy in her AiR studio this fall, and will be working with local high school students and teaching classes this month. She will also be part of the Maker Market. Cortney has been busy expanding the class calendar, which you should have received earlier this week. Let her know if you are interested in teaching a class in the new year.

CMS News…

Holiday Maker Market and Open House – December 8th, 1pm to 4pm. There will be items for sale throughout the building from 12 of our CMS makers, including all types of artisan products.

Upcoming Volunteer OpportunitiesCMS Community Quilts on Dec 19th and COVER Home Repair on Dec 14th both need your help to make quilts and/or window insulation inserts for those less fortunate. No experience needed to help with these programs in the Fibers Department and Wood Shop, and these are free events. If interested in lending a hand, please sign up at the links above and guests are welcome to join you.

Artist in Residence Program – Jane’s work is beautifully displayed in the front lobby and outside her AiR Studio. If you haven’t stopped by yet, please do so to introduce yourself. The application process for the winter Artist in Residence will be posted later this month. Watch the website for details.

Facility Improvements – Several improvements were made in the cafe throughout the fall by Wood Shop Co-Lead John Lambert. He installed a separate filtered water dispenser, built a new serving table, improved a wall, installed another picture hanging system, and best of all, set up the pop corn maker! Thank you John! If you are in the building and smell pop corn, please stop by the cafe to grab a snack. Also, if you would like to display some of your personal artwork or photography in the cafe, please let me know.

Holiday Social – With the many priorities this month, I have not scheduled a holiday social. Given the late date, we’ll plan something in the new year. Stop by my office or send me an email if you have ideas.

REMINDERS

  • Wood Shop Users – We are seeing more issues recently with the Saw Stop and planer. Please take extra care to turn off and clean the Saw Stop when finished using it. Also, materials are damaging the planer. NO pallets or dirt covered wood should go through the planer, and always check for nails. Thank you.
  • Some specialty tools are getting busy. Remember to make a tool reservation if you need it for more than a quick job.
  • Guests/non-members/children are NOT allowed in the building unless they are registered for a class, scheduled for a tour, or attending a public/guest event.

To the many volunteer Shop Leads and Deskers who keep CMS running – thank you for all you do! I wish everyone a joyous holiday season with family and friends! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! …f
